As much as I love 24, I seriously thought this would of been the last season.

I don't think there can be a season 9. They can't keep coming up with new stuff. Season 8 is a lot to ask. I'd like to see a film too. But, I don't think there can be a season 9, unless they drop the quality of the show, and I wouldn't like that.

I think they could do a season 9, but it would probably be another 2 year break like between 6 and 7.
And I agree with smitten on this, Jack would indeed let Kim win;

I like you idea about the ending Sam. Here is my point of view.
Jack has to retire...forced out due to the debilitating effect of the pathogen. They never really cure him. It's treatable but his demise is always on the horizon,because his health is deteriorating.
Jack and Kim are playing chess, but Kim has to leave the room, to check on the baby. When she comes back, she finds Jack slumped over his chair dead. As the realizations sinks in, she leans over and places a soft kiss to his forehead.....fade out!
That's "24"

LOL.....The silent clock is a given. If anyone gets the silent clock? It would be Jack. But I should have posted it.
I can't accept the demise of Jack Bauer either. I never want to see him die on "24" and watching this slow death caused by the pathogen is hearbreaking! In reality, there is no cure for prion. So if he is going to die? I liked Sam's scenario of bringing the show full circle and back to the time, we see Jack and Kim playing chess. I elaborated on his idea.
Season Four gave us the best ending to Jack. He walked off into the sunset...and it was left to our imaginations as to what happened to him.
